What am I eating in France? After living in France for almost a month, I wanted to write about what we have been eating here. Food is delicious here! Most days we start out with yogurt and prunes (the local specialty here in the South of France) with muesli, apples, pecans or walnuts. There are some very healthy seeds already in the muesli, including flax, sesame, and pumpkin. We have bought croissants a couple of times as an added treat but we don’t eat them daily. Of course we also enjoy our cuppa coffee or deux!

Usually we don’t eat breakfast until around 11am. So kind of late which puts our lunch/dinner late afternoon. So eating two main meals with sometimes a cheese plate later with wine. It is easy to eat healthy here because of all the fresh vegetables and fruit available. One can go to a market in every village or you can simply shop at the Inter-Marche or Lidl. If you peruse the meat aisle, you will notice some items you don’t normally see. Lupin (rabbit) is readily available as are frogs legs and beef tongue. One of my favorite meat items is duck which is canard in French. At cafe’s or restaurants it is always possible to find a salad which they serve with foie gras. I had never had it before, so I wanted to try it. It was so creamy and good.
Baguettes are seriously the bread of choice. Every time we go into a Boulangerie someone orders and buys 10-20 baguettes at a time. Possibly for a party or a restaurant. If you walk through a village there is someone headed home with a fresh baguette under their arm. The French take their health seriously, there is not a lot of sugar in the diet. I have also noticed sugar isn’t an additive into sauces and toppings. They also have a health rating published on each package of food you buy. It is labeled from A to F and you can clearly read how healthful it is.

Cheese is its own culinary experience here. One could feel like they have died and gone to France! It is also very inexpensive and so portable. Then there is wine! So many different French wines to choose from whether it be a local vin or one from another region of France. Wine is a staple at lunch and dinner for the French. You can order your lunch along with a glass of wine for 4 Euros.

I have come to really appreciate the food here and hope someday maybe you can experience too!
À bientôt 💋
