I am so lucky to be able to get out in nature daily. I love living so high! John Denver wrote the phrase “Rocky Mountain High”. The song he wrote which took him almost nine months came after his move to Aspen CO. He was writing a song about the peace he felt in the beautiful mountains. He was also writing about his angst for the commercial tourism that was taking hold too. At the time, according to Wikipedia, the song became controversial. This was because the FCC had banned musical lyrics that included words insinuating drug use in them. So for awhile radio stations stopped playing the song. John Denver publicly explained the phrase “everybody’s high.” He described it as an innocent description of the sense of peace he found in the mountains. Particularly after witnessing a meteor shower whilst camping in the mountains.
If you ever get a chance, really view the stars at night. Do this when you are far away from city lights! It is one of the most spectacular things you can witness.
Especially on a clear Winter night when it is so dark and the frozen air takes my breath away! But I slip outside for just a few seconds and stare upward. I am transported back to my childhood. My father would take us out of the city on backpacking trips. The grueling trek was always filled with us children griping and asking “are we there yet?”
After making camp somewhere high in the Sierra Nevada Mountains it would be dinner and then time to sleep. My father would wake us up and say “Look at the Sky!”
The most beautiful thing I had ever seen came into our vision. The stars! I was raised in the Bay Area of San Francisco. There weren’t a lot of stars to see with all the city lights.
It was a time that I am eternally grateful for. My father loved to introduce his children to the beauty of the mountains and all that went with it. The forest, the animals, the flowers and trees. I have ever been a tree-hugger because of him.
He took us to Yosemite and much of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. He took us to the bottom of the Grand Canyon and parts of the Canadian Rockies. He took us to Wyoming and the Grand Tetons. It is still my favorite National Park. I am so thankful for those experiences and the time I spent there. I hope and pray that those National Parks, and public lands stay open and not ever abused by man. For my children, their children, and their children.
Thank you for reading my blog!
Tschüss! Peace and Love
