To Tint or not to Tint

Adding tinting to windows

In America it is up to the individual States to decide whether this is legal or not. I live in Colorado, a State in which being outside and doing things is the preferred way of living. That being said, if I am riding my bicycle or running or walking and cannot make eye contact with the driver of a 5,000 pound moving vehicle, then I am up a creek. I cannot tell whether or not the driver sees me or is texting or in some other way engaged in a manner where he isn’t paying attention.

States regulate window tinting on vehicles according to a VLT or Visible Light Transmission measurement. VLT refers to the percentage of light that can filter through your tint. For example, if you have a 30% VLT, your tinted window is going to let 30% of light into your vehicle. The lower the percentage, the darker the tint, and the less likely light is able to come through

In Colorado, the tinting of all windows of an automobile is allowed up to 27% which means that it is pretty dark, only enabling 27% of light to get through the window.

I used to cycle through the streets in the Denver Metro area regularly, and had several intersections in which there was lots of traffic. When the vehicles had clear windows, I had no problem seeing the driver and making sure he saw me by making eye contact. The ones I couldn’t tell if they saw me had all four windows tinted including the drivers side window. I would have to come to a complete stop and wait until they passed, and was totally ignorant if they ever saw me on my bicycle. Think about the difference of a vehicle which weighs a couple ton more than me and my gear does. This is a huge safety issue for many who commute via cycle or who simply prefer to walk in cities. Taking risks like this daily is a reality for many and I happen to not think this is ok. What do you think? Does your State or Country have laws about tinting windows on vehicles? A couple of decades ago, I drove a VW Quantum that had the German factory applied as standard equipment. I found out they barely passed the Nebraska standards. From a driver’s viewpoint, I liked the dark tint because I did not need to wear sunglasses as frequently. In my opinion, the tint enhanced my ability to drive and I never had any problems seeing bicyclists and motorcyclists.

Hi Swabby429, I am glad to hear that you could see the people on bikes, and/or walking, but it always felt unsafe for me as a cyclist, because I couldn’t make eye contact with drivers with tinted windows. I was never sure they were seeing me or my hand signals.
